The Orchestra
Expected outcome
The Orchestra is a group dynamic to show in a creative and effective waythe ability and willingness of individual to take their own personal powerand responsibility in the group.
Abstract
Using art and music to show social principles is always stimulating and unusual. The Orchestra makes people sing in group and – if they take the center – also as soloist. No tools required, just the space to stand and the time to do the exercise. For groups between 10 and 25. It is related to the Individual & Community layers, but also a bit to Intention.
Content
The facilitator invites everyone to stand in circle, no hands joined.The Orchestra plays in three rounds, at the sign of the facilitator –conductor:1 :
- Everyone mentally pick a melody and sings is (only music, no words,la la la …) individually for about 3 – 4 minutes, then silence(Metaphor: Individualism).
- The conductor invites any participant to start singing his/her own motive, and everyone else has to follow him/her and sing the same song (always la la la). 3 – 4 minutes, silence. (Metaphor: Follow the leader).
- The conductor now invites the same person to start the melody, and every participant, in turns, to take the center and improvise a personal motive, singing and dancing in front of everyone. The chorus is instructed: no clapping or cheering, just keep the base going and support the soloist in the moment. 5-6 minutes, then close.(Metaphor: Collaboration and personal power with group support).
Wrap up
Debriefing : the facilitator will pose the questions: what do the three
phases represent? How did you feel in phase 1 / 2 / 3? How did it feel
to take the center? How did it feel not to take the center? What
reflections does it bring on our ability to take our power? (5- 6 minutes).
